Conflict Consulting and Training

Direct facilitation, consulting, and training to help you have more “good” conflict.

Your biggest problems are rooted in conflict. And it’s costing you a lot.

Weak collaboration is often rooted in unresolved conflict among department leaders. Projects go over budget and get behind schedule because the tough conversations were avoided along the way.

There are three levels of direct work: (1) real-time conflict strategy development for individuals, (2) facilitation and retreats to help a team resolve conflict, and (3) conflict system design projects to build good conflict into your culture. I also offer training for staffs and boards.

Real-Time Conflict Strategy

The easiest place to start: one week to a clear strategy around a conflict you’re facing.

How it works.

I will help you develop a clear strategy for moving forward effectively with a difficult conflict your having right now—with a colleague, a board member, another organization, whoever it is. I’m not talking to the other parties or mediating—I’m there to make sure you are taking clear, well-considered actions that build progress and maintain momentum. Here’s how it works:

  • Initial call: A 60-minute intake conversation to understand the situation.
  • Document review: Time for me to review any relevant documents or background you share with me.
  • Follow-up call: One optional follow-up call if something needs more digging or clarification.
  • Conflict Strategy Report: A short written report with recommendations, delivered within a week of the intake.
  • Flat Fee: $2,000.

Facilitation and Retreats

When teams are mired in conflict I can convene them and work the issues through to a clear resolution. This works for teams at any level, including senior leadership teams and Boards.

How it works.

I do half-day or full-day facilitations where the team will develop a shared understanding of the key issues and commit to specific follow actions to resolve the situation. Here’s how it works:

  • Pre-work: 1-1 interviews with each of the team members to understand their unique perspectives and develop a prioritized set of themes that becomes the agenda for the meeting.
  • Facilitation: I facilitate a direct conversation about the themes that emerged from the interviews. We work through each issue until the resolution is complete. At least one third of the time will be on what the group will do differently moving forward.
  • Follow-up: I schedule one virtual follow-up call with team, and individual participants can reach out to me directly with follow up questions and to get advice.
  • Standard Fee: $10,000 full day, $7,500 half day (plus travel).

The initial consultation is free.

If this seems like a fit, reach out and we’ll set up a short conversation to see whether the timing is right for your organization.

Conflict System Design

A focused, virtual engagement that puts the foundational building blocks of an operable conflict system in place. Three two-hour working sessions plus a follow-up call, structured around the framework in my conflict system essay.

My essays are kept behind the paywall for my newsletter subscribers, but you can download the full essay here so you can see what this project is about.

How it works.

8 weeks, three workshops, a few follow up calls and you’ve got your conflict system up and running. Here’s how it works:

  • Pre-work: A 20-question Conflict System Scan, designed to point you toward the specific areas you should be working on.
  • Session 1: Diagnosis. We debrief the scan results together. What’s the shape of your current system? Where is it strongest, where is it under strain, and where would intentional design produce the most value?
  • Between sessions: The team works through homework documents that lay out what intentional capacity, process, and governance interventions actually look like, with criteria for choosing where to focus.
  • Session 2: Design. We workshop three specific interventions (one each in capacity, process, and governance) that the team commits to building. In a follow up cll we will refine the three into proposal-ready pitches that the working group brings to senior leadership for approval.
  • Session 3: Evaluation. A few weeks later we review what got launched, what’s working, what isn’t, and what the next move is
  • Fee: $7,500, payable up front. Engagement runs roughly six to eight weeks from kickoff to evaluation session. Entirely virtual.

You also have a coaching option.

If you think you need ongoing support to work through your tough conflicts or even your conflict system design, coaching may be the right choice for you.

Conflict Training

Focused sessions for either your staff or your board to build their capacity for good conflict.

Staff Training

This action-oriented and concrete  training builds real capacity for conflict conversations across your whole team. It is a practical, skills-based experience that changes how your people show up when things get hard. I cover four areas that together shift how your team handles friction:

  • Mindset — Understanding your own conflict styles and emotional responses so you can choose how you react rather than just reacting.
  • Problem-solving — Using principled negotiation to move past positions to find solutions that actually work for everyone involved.
  • Conflict conversations — Concrete tools and frameworks for having the hard conversation clearly, fairly, and without it blowing up.
  • Conflict systems — how organizational processes and governance rules can set up some conflicts for failure, and what to do about it.

The fee is $4500. Read full prospectus here.

Board Training

Add this 90-minute session to one of your existing board meetings to ensure that your board is surfacing and resolving the right conflicts. I can customize the session to your needs, but here is the standard structure:

  • Pre-work: A brief, open-ended online survey for board members to get a sense of how conflict is surfaced now.
  • The problem: Presentation and board discussion of the inherently limited capacity boards have to surface conflict and how that has negative impact individually, inside relationships, and for the organization as a whole.
  • The solution: Presentation and board discussion of strategies to build capacity and introduce processes that improve the ability to surface the right conflicts.
  • Commitments: Choosing one new action or process to implement moving forward.
  • Fee: $3,000.

Why Do This Work?

Speed

We waste so much time doing end-runs around complete departments because we’re afraid of conflict. Want to finish ahead of schedule? Then handle your conflicts.

Agility

My culture data show that organizations who handle change well also report the ability to deal with conflict easily. Resolving your conflicts helps you manage change.

Retention

The top talent won’t tolerate a workplace full of drama and unresolved conflict, at least not for long. Create a workplace people want to be at, which means handling conflict.

"

Jamie helped our association staff manage conflict better by helping us to ensure the conflict stays healthy and adds to our organization development and not detract.  We have been so happy with his assistance on conflict management, that we have brought Jamie in to deliver a training program with our members.”

Jeff Morgan, CEO
Club Management Association of America

My Approach

I bring a master’s degree in conflict analysis and resolution to this work and have been practing for three decades. I rely heavily on bringing in real data from your system to guide the conversations that move the needle. The problem isn’t conflict. The problem is we never learned how to transform conflict’s power.
